If you watched the 2024 Paris Olympics from somewhere within the U.S. this summer, you may have noticed a brand-new, recurring commercial advertising the latest in Chevrolet’s lineup of electric vehicles (EV’s), the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV.
An eco-friendly reimagining of the fourth-generation Chevrolet Equinox, this new EV has finally hit the market, after reports from as far back as 2023 anticipated its release to be sometime in “mid-2024.”
Now the long-awaited vehicle has officially landed for sale across the country. And it’s not only “green,” i.e. good for the planet; its base model is nearly as affordable as an average sedan, such as the Toyota Corolla, and it has a practical interior that sets it apart from other crossover SUV’s.
Each fresh-off-the-line model boasts a level of comfort to assuage those who are used to full-sized vehicles. Perhaps most importantly, every model comes readily equipped with an impressive array of cutting-edge safety features.
Affordability
According to CarandDriver.com, the most affordable model of Chevrolet’s latest EV, the 1LT, has yet to be released. The same online report stated that, when the 1LT does come out later this year, it will be sold for the budget-friendly price of $34,995 MSRP.
Compare the 1LT’s window sticker price to the already-popular crossover SUV, the Hyundai Kona Electric, which has a base MSRP of $38,535, and you’re well in the ballpark of affordability.
It is worth noting that the Chevrolet Equinox EV’s 1LT model only has front-wheel drive (FWD), while the 2LT model, which is available now, uses all-wheel drive (AWD).
For those who live in regions of the U.S. where the winters can be extreme, we recommend the 2LT for it’s AWD capabilities. Thankfully, as winter is around the corner, the 2LT is available to all who wish to make a purchase this month and well into the future.
It is also worth noting that, when the 1LT is released, it will be able to travel longer distances with its FWD, reaching a maximum estimated range of 319 miles.
But if you’re worried about range, the currently-available 2LT doesn’t fall far behind. The 2LT’s AWD means that it has a slightly reduced maximum estimated range compared to the 1LT, but not by much. The 2LT is able to reach a maximum estimated range of 285 miles.
One test driver reported that, after traveling consistently at around 70 mph for 125 miles down the east coast of the U.S., there still remained an estimated 173 miles on the car’s range indicator – meaning that Chevy’s estimated range for their Equinox EV is not far off the mark.
Comfort and function
While most early EV’s were sedans, the capability of electric motors has expanded to be able to power larger vehicles like the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV, which is a crossover (mid-size) SUV.
Because of the larger size of the vehicle, which seats up to five, there is more room for comfort when taking one for a spin (carpool, anyone?). Your traveling companions may appreciate what drivers have already hailed as a “smooth and quiet” ride, which is characteristic of many EV’s.
Additionally, the vehicle’s front-row seats are higher than that of typical sedans, allowing for better vision of the road in front of you and better rearview mirror sightlines for “protecting your six.”
Modern vehicle dashboards have evolved as well. Chevy’s newest EV comes adequately and sleekly equipped with a 17.7-inch touch screen on the center dash (colloquially called an “info-tainment system”) and an 11-inch “driver information center,” which is located behind the wheel. Comfort is not just for the back and legs, but the eyes as well, and the new Equinox EV has dutifully ensured both.
Early drivers and owners of the 2LT model have already reported that the car is easier to get in and out of than a typical sedan because of its raised posture.
It also contains ample rear storage, which would easily fit a walker or wheelchair (or both, depending on the size of your party and your passengers’ needs).
Safety
Every model of the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV will have Chevy Safety Assist, a modern safety package, also called an advanced driving assistance system (ADAS). Chevy Safety Assist comes standard on all Chevy vehicles. The package includes:
- Automatic emergency braking (can be switched off)
- Front pedestrian braking (can be switched off)
- Lane keep assist (can be switched off)
- Lane departure warnings
- Forward collision alert
- A following distance indicator
- Intellibeam headlights, which turn high beams on automatically at speeds above 25 mph when vehicle detects dark lighting and/or other vehicles
- Reverse automatic braking
- Adaptive cruise control
- Hands-free driving mode
Additionally, the EV’s 2LT model is considered safer than any given compact sedan because of its AWD capabilities, which allows for greater control during harsh weather conditions and, technically, at all times.
