How can you reduce your fleet's carbon footprint?

Top performing Fleet Managers pay close attention to the overall "health" of each vehicle in their fleet, they focus on improving driver behavior, and implement the following best practices:

  1. Keep engines properly tuned. A poor running engine uses more fuel.

  2. Use the correct grade of motor oil for the engine. Using the wrong grade can lower fuel efficiency by 1-2%. Source: http://www.fueleconomy.gov

  3. Keep tires properly inflated. Tires at the correct PSI don’t sag and have less rubber on the road. Less friction equals improved fuel efficiency of up to 3%. Source: http://www.fueleconomy.gov Tires will last longer too.

  4. Incorporate natural gas, hybrid, or all electric vehicles into your fleet.

  5. Utilize a Fleet Telematics System which can provide data on fuel consumption, idle time, and engine data.

  6. Educate employees on efficient driver behavior, i.e., avoiding jack rabbit starts, speeding, and heavy braking.

  7. Provide incentives to drivers for increasing fuel efficiency.

  8. Replace older, less fuel-efficient vehicles with newer models.

  9. Take advantage of tax incentives for using alternative fuel vehicles.

  10. Don’t carry unnecessary weight in vehicles. It costs more to haul more.

Incorporate these maintenance tips and consider some of the newer technologies. A Fleet Services specialist is always available to discuss Telematics or alternative fuel vehicles with you at your convenience.
